Creativity to Actions

Who doesn't know that you have to unlearn before you learn, and that the first task is the more difficult of the two?

Art Thinking

Practically, sustainable creativity, up to actions, relies on the core tenets of design: desirability, sustainability, and feasibility. Some topics such as radical innovation or entrepreneurship resist classical approaches that often prove unsuitable. On this page, let's explore creativity with three frameworks to support radical changes, innovation, and ways to cope with uncertainty or, even more, Improbable situations.

A radical perspective

Design thinking is a mindset and a shift to explore with radically different perspectives, a beginner mindset to be more creative in solving problems, making sense of new opportunities, and improving the way we collaborate with more curiosity and inclusiveness. DT is far more than a toolkit.

Disciplined Entrepreneurship

Going from 0 to 1 and hopefully scaling up securely and profitably is business innovation. It takes a Lean Startup mindset and method to go from ideation, market segmentation, understanding your persona, making money off your ideas, and growing your sales.

Improbable to certainty

Dramatic issues of all kinds are unpredictable and even seem "improbable" until it's not anymore. Art Thinking is an "avant-garde" method framed by Sylvain Bureau as a course combined with an agile Improbable Seminar. This method draws from the artists' approach to challenge reality, convey new perspectives, and explore potentialities.

Design Thinking

What is it about?

Design Thinking is an approach and a mindset to creative problem-solving or opportunity ideation in the service of people. Mindoo proposes to facilitate innovation. e.g., build and implement new business models, design value streams or operation target models (Agile), improve operational efficiency (Lean management), or any requirements characterized by open and uncertain issues.

Design Thinking iterative & testing approach

A creative mindset

Design Thinking is a disciplined, collaborative approach to articulating the imagination and innovation process into a structured method to create new business models, products, and services.

More than a method, Design Thinking is a mindset that draws from a:

  • "beginner mindset,"
  • customer (or team)-centric approach,
  • divergent-convergent way of tackling open issues
  • deep yearning for creating new, positive, and practical solutions for the people the designers want to serve.

Work goes through three stages: Understand the problem (or unaddressed need), explore solutions, and materialize new products, services, or solutions.

Design in practice

As part of a tailored approach or integrated within the Scaled Agile Framework, Mindoo Management applies the Design Thinking approach and artifacts for workshops anytime the divergent-convergent dynamics help address complex issues or opportunities with a fresh perspective. LUMA Institute summarized the main tools and techniques (see below) we may implement at the different stages (Analyse, frame the problem, and materialize solutions) over three main dimensions (What the people think? How do they behave? Why do they do what they do?

Lean Startup innovation

What is it about?

A structured and disciplined framework articulates the different steps of the innovation process to build and start a profitable business. The Disciplined Entrepreneurship approach comes up with clear and structured outcomes to validate and communicate each step.

Lean startup in consulting

In the range of innovation methods applied by startup and innovative teams, there is a need for a disciplined approach to turning ideas into actionable reality and concepts and ultimately into a Most Viable Product (MVP). Following a disciplined method, we incrementally experience that innovation doesn’t reserve for a few, inspired by cosmic forces or weird or artistic traits.

This framework refers to the Lean Startup methodology developed by the Martin Trust Center for MIT Entrepreneurship. This presentation results from the training passed certification and the materials acquired by Cyril Lagrange, Mindoo's Management representative.

Art Thinking Method

What is it about?

Art Thinking is a unique method to cope with an Improbable situation and explore possible paths to find options with more certainty.

"From the impacts of Covid-19 to climate change: Uncertainty has become our new certainty. Thinking like an artist can leverage the way organizations deal with this uncertainty. How? Using the artist’s mindset to create new strategies, managerial solutions, business models, or communication tools that appear upfront to be improbable." (Source. Art Thinking Collective)

The Improbable Seminar is the practical experience of the method. This seminar blends lectures on creativity and innovation delivered by professors and experts, exercises, masterclasses with modern artists or Culture Institutions (e.g., Beaubourg, Le Louvre), roundtables with experts or entrepreneurs, and design workshops led by the members of the seminar team (workshops make up with close to half of the seminar).  It’s a creativity hackathon.

The practical goal is to explore an « improbable » situation to produce new representations that challenge a status quo or solve a problem. Incidentally, it nudges participants to embrace uncertainty and change. You create with your team an authentic piece of artwork. Though there are no formal restrictions except time, resources, and talent, you may craft any artful outcome without expecting to be an artist yourself. See below the guidelines and the great experience of your Opening.

Mindoo Management is engaged in developing the Art Thinking method, promotion, organization, and facilitation of the Improbable Seminar.

Guidelines of the method

This seminar borrows from the artists' creative mindset. It allows you to explore complex or open situations, share different perspectives, constructively deviate or even deconstruct them, and give a new representation that carries meaning.

Your margin for creativity is wide-opened though it is requested to comply with four core principles:

  1. Improbable (e.g., the work does not exist on Google; it is difficult to predict, even for you)
  2. Embodiment (e.g., the work represents, with a physical form, the "creators": their values, their expertise, and, above all, their intentions)
  3. Efficient (e.g., the work produces a high impact with few resources)
  4. Subversive (e.g., the work challenges a status quo)

Besides the advanced lectures on creativity and innovation, participants have to implement what they learn to build their piece of work, collaborating in an agile, tailored manner (see below) with the facilitation of trained professors and professionals.

Description of agile workshops part of an Improbable Seminar (Art Thinking)

The Improbable Seminar and your private Opening ("Vernissage")

During four days (customizable), the Improbable seminar is an opportunity for 25 to 40 people from the same organization to explore a theme of common interest (need for adaptation, significant risk, an opportunity for development, or improvement).

All participants deep dive into the creative process of the artist. It’s a starting point to reflect on the topics they worked on and the representations they created about them (Note that data privacy and use are addressed upfront with the client sponsors). In agile teams of 5 persons or so, they will implement the Art Thinking method to build a unique piece of work that they will exhibit in an actual opening organized remotely or online with a special-purpose digital platform operated by the teaching team of professors and facilitators. The opening is the time to engage with their communities.

At any stage, we implement the best standards to preserve privacy and comply with GDPR regarding all outcomes. The client’s sponsor defines the guidelines for access permissions to the opening in collaboration with the curator team. Afterward, your teams are free to exploit all ideas, outcomes, and breakthroughs according to your organization’s terms.
